Napa County Wildfire Defense Experts

Napa is unlike anywhere else we work. A 788 square mile county whose global reputation, tourism economy, and generations of family investment all sit on ground that has burned repeatedly in the past decade.

Napa Valley itself runs 30 miles from American Canyon in the south to Calistoga at the north, framed by the Mayacamas Mountains on the west (Mount Veeder, Spring Mountain, Diamond Mountain) and the Vaca Range on the east (Atlas Peak, Howell Mountain). The mountain AVAs sit inside some of the highest fire hazard zones in the state. The valley floor AVAs like Rutherford, Oakville, and Stags Leap face lower direct exposure but carry the highest per-acre values in California wine country. American Canyon at the south transitions into Solano’s terrain and fire patterns.

Red Lion Wildfire Defense works across every corner of this. Estate homes on Howell Mountain, family vineyards in Chiles Valley, tasting rooms in Yountville, hospitality properties in Calistoga, and residential neighborhoods across the city of Napa. The work is different in each place, but the stakes are always the same.

Wildfire Risk Assessment

Property-specific wildfire risk assessments for Napa Valley homes, estates, and vineyards. Red Lion evaluates vegetation, Cal Fire Chapter 7A structural vulnerabilities, and ember exposure from Mount Veeder to Rutherford. You receive a Fire Aside interactive report formatted for insurance renewal and FAIR Plan applications.

Defensible Space Design

Zone 0, 1, and 2 defensible space design built to Cal Fire PRC 4291 standards tailored to your Napa property. Plans account for the terrain and fire behavior Napa saw in 2017 and 2020, tailored to mountain AVA estates, vineyards, and valley floor homes. Installation is project-managed through vetted contractors.

Home Hardening Design

Cal Fire Chapter 7A compliant hardening across six ignition points: roofs, vents, windows, decks, siding and gutters. Priorities come from structural loss patterns observed in the 2017 Atlas and Tubbs fires and the 2020 Glass Fire. You spend on upgrades that improved survival odds.

Community Education

Wildfire preparedness training for Napa HOAs, Firewise USA sites, winery and hospitality teams, and neighborhood groups. Programs cover PRC 4291 defensible space, home hardening, and evacuation planning, delivered with the Napa Communities Firewise Foundation where appropriate.

Wildfire Risk Consulting

Independent consulting for Napa estates, wineries, and HOA boards facing insurance non-renewal, carrier reinspection, or FAIR Plan transition. Red Lion provides third-party verification against IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home and Safer from Wildfires standards. The documentation gives carriers and brokers evidence to reconsider coverage or restore premium tiers.

Wildfire Defense Monitoring

Scheduled wildfire defense monitoring across Napa Valley, inspecting defensible space, home hardening, and vegetation against Cal Fire PRC 4291 and Zone 0 standards. Red Lion documents what has drifted from compliance so your contractors have a clear specification to work from, and your insurer has a documented compliance record for renewal.

Note: Red Lion is not an insurance broker or licensed agent, and does not sell, place, or advise on insurance policies or coverage.

2017 & 2020

Napa Has Faced A Difficult Recent Wildfire Past

Most of California talks about wildfire as a future risk. Napa lives with the memory of two years that changed everything, and with the question of what the next major fire event will look like.

The Fires That Reshaped The Valley

In two Octobers three years apart, Napa County was hit harder by wildfire than almost any other California wine region has been in the modern era.

Insurance Market Dynamics

Napa County has been at the center of California’s homeowner insurance crisis. Non-renewals and premium spikes have hit vineyard estates, mountain AVA properties, and hillside homes hardest of anywhere in Northern California wine country and what it means for property owners:

Regions & Communities We Serve

Wildfire Defense Across Napa Valley

From the Mayacamas ridgeline to the valley floor to the eastern Vaca Range. Every AVA and every town in Napa County has different fire conditions, and we know them.

Mount Veeder & Spring Mountain

The Mayacamas ridgeline west of the valley, where estate vineyards and homes sit at 1,000 to 2,600 feet among Redwood, Fir, and Oak canopy. High fire hazard zones throughout, with steep terrain and narrow access roads. Historic properties on Mount Veeder Road and along Spring Mountain Road require specialized defensible space design.

Howell Mountain & Angwin

The high ground east of St. Helena, home to Angwin and Pacific Union College along with some of Napa’s most celebrated Cabernet vineyards. Elevations from 1,400 to 2,200 feet, densely wooded, and inside the burn footprint of the 2020 Glass Fire. Fire defense here means canopy management and estate hardening.

Atlas Peak & Chiles Valley

The eastern Vaca Range, epicenter of the 2017 Atlas Fire that burned into Silverado and threatened the city of Napa. Isolated estate properties, mixed conifer and Oak canopy, and steep drainage into the valley below. Cal Fire LNU Unit responsibility zones cover much of this ground.

Rutherford & Oakville

The heart of Napa Valley Cabernet country along Highway 29 and the Silverado Trail. Working vineyards, historic estates, and some of the highest per-acre property values in California. Defense here focuses on estate homes, tasting rooms, and outbuildings, with vineyards themselves often acting as fire breaks.

Stags Leap & Yountville

The Stags Leap District against the eastern hills, plus the town of Yountville with its hospitality and residential properties. Lower direct wildland exposure than the mountain AVAs but real ember risk during regional fire events. Priorities are Zone 0 hardening and structure preparation.

St. Helena

The valley’s central town, ringed by vineyards and pressed against the Mayacamas on the west and Howell Mountain on the east. The 2020 Glass Fire burned into the town’s eastern hillside neighborhoods, and much of the Deer Park corridor faces active wildland urban interface risk.

Calistoga

The northernmost town in Napa Valley, at the base of Mount Saint Helena and near the Palisades. Surrounded by mountain terrain on three sides. The 2020 LNU Lightning Complex threatened evacuation, and the 2017 Tubbs Fire came within miles. Hospitality properties, hot springs resorts, and residential neighborhoods all face significant exposure.

Napa

The county’s largest city, home to a wide mix of urban, suburban, and hillside neighborhoods. Silverado Country Club and Silverado Trail hillside properties face active wildland urban interface risk. The 2017 Atlas Fire threatened east Napa neighborhoods directly. Defense priorities shift by neighborhood.

American Canyon & Berryessa

American Canyon at the county’s southern edge (bordering Solano) and Berryessa Estates at the eastern edge near Lake Berryessa. Different fire environments than the valley proper: American Canyon has grass and interface risk, Berryessa Estates was directly inside the 2020 Hennessey Fire burn footprint.

Environments We Work In

Mountain, Valley, And Everything Between

Napa’s fire behavior varies more by elevation and AVA than by city name. A defense strategy for a Howell Mountain estate looks nothing like a strategy for a Yountville tasting room. Here is how we think about each environment.

The Mountain AVAs

Mount Veeder, Spring Mountain, Diamond Mountain, Howell Mountain, Atlas Peak. High elevation, dense canopy, steep grade, narrow access roads, and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone designation throughout. Our work here focuses on canopy separation, ladder fuel reduction, estate structure hardening, and access route clearance.

The Valley Floor AVAs

Rutherford, Oakville, Stags Leap, Yountville, and the vineyard-dominated ground between them. Lower direct wildland exposure but real ember risk during regional fire events. Vineyards themselves often act as fire breaks. Our work focuses on estate hardening, tasting room preparation, and outbuilding defense.

Valley Towns & Urban Napa

Calistoga, St. Helena, Yountville, and the city of Napa. Mixed urban, suburban, and hillside residential neighborhoods. Ember exposure is the dominant risk, particularly during the extreme fire behavior events the county has already lived through. Our work here emphasizes Zone 0 hardening and structural preparation.

Vineyard Estates & Working Wineries

Working vineyards with estate homes, tasting rooms, barrel storage, and hospitality operations on the same property. Fire defense here has to protect residential structure, agricultural operation, and commercial hospitality simultaneously. Our work coordinates across all three, often with vineyard managers and operations teams.

Hospitality & Tourism Properties

Hot springs resorts in Calistoga, hospitality inns in Yountville, tasting rooms across the valley. Fire defense at these properties has to account for guest safety, business continuity, and property preservation. Insurance requirements often exceed residential standards. We work with owners and operators on integrated defensible space plans.

Berryessa & Lake Region

Berryessa Estates, the Lake Berryessa shoreline, and Pope Valley on the county’s eastern edge. Rural properties inside the 2020 Hennessey Fire burn footprint, with the specific challenges of remote access, limited water resources, and post-fire regrowth. Our work here handles recovery, replanting, and forward defense.

Napa County faq

Napa County Property Owners Common Asks

Real questions we hear from vineyard estates, winery operators, hospitality properties, and homeowners across the Napa Valley AVA.

Do vineyards actually act as fire breaks in Napa County?

Vineyards in Napa, Rutherford, Oakville, and across the valley floor can slow surface fire spread and reduce ember production compared to open grassland or brush when they are green and well-irrigated. However, vineyards do not stop the wind-driven ember cast that carries fire hundreds of yards ahead of the flame front, and the 2020 Glass Fire demonstrated that vineyards do not protect adjacent structures during extreme fire weather. Red Lion treats vineyards as one useful element in a broader defensible space strategy aligned with Cal Fire PRC 4291, not as a substitute for Zone 0, 1, and 2 work around structures.

Mountain AVA properties on Mount Veeder, Spring Mountain, Diamond Mountain, Howell Mountain, and Atlas Peak sit inside Cal Fire Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones with steep terrain, dense Oak and Fir canopy, and narrow access roads. Defense priorities include aggressive canopy separation, ladder fuel reduction, Cal Fire Chapter 7A ignition-resistant hardening at ember exposure points, and evacuation route clearance. Insurance carriers treat Napa mountain AVA properties differently than valley floor properties, often requiring documented third-party mitigation before renewing policies.

The 2020 Glass Fire burned 67,484 acres from Deer Park through Howell Mountain and into St. Helena and taught Napa several hard lessons. Wine caves and stone structures survived where wood-sided buildings did not. Zone 0 clearance within five feet of structures made a measurable difference in which homes survived. Class A metal roofs held up under ember attack while wood shake did not. Wooden fences and decks were the most common ignition point for otherwise defensible homes. Every Red Lion assessment in Napa reflects these observed structural loss patterns rather than pre-2017 theory.

Napa is one of the hardest counties in California for homeowner insurance renewal, alongside portions of Sonoma, Los Angeles, and the mountain Sierra. Non-renewals and California FAIR Plan transitions have hit mountain AVA properties, hillside estates, and rural properties hardest. Under California’s Safer from Wildfires framework, documented mitigation aligned with IBHS Wildfire Prepared Home standards carries measurable weight with carriers. Red Lion’s assessment and completion documentation is designed specifically for the carrier and FAIR Plan realities Napa property owners face.

Red Lion works with wineries, tasting rooms, hot springs resorts, and hospitality inns across Napa Valley, from Calistoga to Yountville to the city of Napa. Hospitality and winery properties combine residential, agricultural, and commercial dimensions on the same site, so wildfire defense has to protect guest safety, business continuity, and property preservation together. We coordinate directly with owners, general managers, vineyard managers, and hospitality operators to align Zone 0, 1, and 2 planning across all three dimensions.

Yes, Red Lion engages directly with the Napa Communities Firewise Foundation (napafirewise.org) and its neighborhood chapters across Napa Valley. The Foundation and local Firewise USA sites do critical prevention work on community wildfire protection planning, chipper days, and neighborhood assessments. Red Lion supports their work with assessment methodology training, speaking at community events, and coordination on Community Wildfire Protection Plan activities where useful.

Napa County falls within Cal Fire’s Sonoma-Lake-Napa Unit (LNU), one of the busiest wildland fire response units in California. LNU coordinated the response to the 2017 Atlas, Nuns, and Tubbs fires and the 2020 LNU Lightning Complex and Glass Fire. Local city fire departments in Napa, St. Helena, Calistoga, Yountville, and American Canyon coordinate with LNU during major incidents. Property owners in State Responsibility Areas across the Mayacamas, Vaca Range, and Berryessa region fall under LNU jurisdiction for defensible space inspections under PRC 4291.

Working In Napa

What Sets Our Napa Wildfire Defense Services Apart

Wine country is different. The properties, the stakes, the operational complexity, and the economic dimension all shift how wildfire defense works here. This is how we approach it.

01

Wine Country Property Fluency

We speak the language of vineyard managers, hospitality operators, and estate owners. Defensible space design that respects the character of the property, coordinates with viticultural cycles, and works alongside existing operations rather than disrupting them.

02

Post 2017 And 2020 Perspective

Our defense strategy is calibrated for what actually happened in those two years, not for theoretical fire behavior. We understand ember run distances, structure loss patterns, and which mitigation actually held up when tested. That knowledge is baked into every assessment.

03

Napa Firewise Coordination

Active engagement with the Napa Communities Firewise Foundation and regional Fire Safe Council chapters. Coordination with Cal Fire LNU Unit for State Responsibility Areas. Familiarity with the specific ordinances Napa County and each incorporated town enforce.
