What Is Wildfire Defense Monitoring?
Wildfire defense is not a one time project. Vegetation grows back, gutters fill with debris, decks accumulate leaf litter, and Cal Fire standards evolve. Without ongoing monitoring, even the best defensible space design starts to lose effectiveness within a single season.
Red Lion monitors your defensible space, home hardening, and vegetation against current Cal Fire PRC 4291 and Zone 0 standards for properties across Napa, Solano, and Contra Costa counties. Scheduled inspections document what’s drifted from the plan so contractors are clear on exactly what needs attention and to what standard before the next fire season.
Three Areas
What The Service Covers
Our monitoring service focuses on the three areas that erode fastest and matter most for wildfire defense.
Vegetation Monitoring
Scheduled inspection of trees, shrubs, grasses, and ground cover against current Cal Fire spacing and ladder-fuel standards. Red Lion documents what has grown back, what needs limbing or thinning, and what has become fuel, so your tree and landscape contractors have a clear specification to work from.
Hardscape & Structure Monitoring
Inspection of gutters, vents, decks, siding, and the Zone 0 ember-resistant perimeter around every structure. Red Lion documents accumulated debris, degraded ember-resistant materials, and any Chapter 7A compliance gaps, so repairs and clearance are addressed before the next fire season.
Defensible Space Compliance
Inspection of all three Cal Fire zones (0, 1, and 2) against the current PRC 4291 and AB 3074 standards. Red Lion captures & records how your defensible space has drifted from the original design and what needs to be done to bring each zone back into compliance & maximum mitigation protection.
why choose red lion wildfire defense
Certified Wildfire Defense Specialists Serving Napa, Solano & Contra Costa
General landscapers and gardeners can clear vegetation. But wildfire defense monitoring requires knowing what’s fuel, what’s protective, and what current standards require.
ISA Certified Arborist
Science backed knowledge of tree biology, safety, and proper long-term maintenance. Essential for identifying which trees need to be removed and which fire-resistant canopy trees should be pruned and preserved to block ember pathways.
Certified Wildfire Mitigation Specialist
Verifies advanced knowledge in wildland fire science, home hardening, Home ignition zone, defensible space and community-wide planning within the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI).
Cal Fire Timber Operator
Licensed Timber Operator B. Under California’s Z’berg-Nejedly Forest Practice Act, strictly follow the Forest Practice Rules and proves we know how to work safely inside sensitive forest ecosystems: for Watercourse Protection, Erosion Control, and Fire Prevention.
Fire Fighter 2 Trained
NWCG certified, Fire Forward trained, Good Fire Alliance credentialed, with current 2026 Wildland Firefighter Type 2 status. We apply the same fire behavior science used by the U.S. Forest Service and CAL FIRE to read how fire will move across your specific terrain and topography.

Monitoring Cadence That Fits Your Property
Every property is different. Some need quarterly visits, others need seasonal timing tied to fire risk, others need a custom schedule based on terrain and fuel load. We recommend what makes sense
Scheduled Visits
Fixed monitoring schedule set at the start of the engagement with inspections at agreed intervals. Suits property owners who want predictable visits and a continuous compliance record year after year.
Seasonal Visits
Two inspections per year timed to pre-fire season and post-fire season. Catches winter rain growth before summer and documents any damage or vegetation drift after fire weather passes.
Custom Schedule
Monitoring cadence set around your property’s specific exposure. Suits ranches, vineyards, and estates where terrain, acreage, or fire history justifies more frequent inspections than a residential schedule.

Monitoring FAQs
Common questions about ongoing wildfire defense monitoring. If yours isn’t here, book a consultation and ask Kevin directly.
Do I need to be an existing Red Lion client to book a monitoring service?
Red Lion monitors properties across Napa, Solano, and Contra Costa whether Red Lion designed the original defensible space or someone else did. If Red Lion designed it, we already have the plan to inspect against. If another contractor did the work, the first visit documents what’s in place before we agree on a monitoring schedule.
Can a lanscaper not also monitor my property?
A landscaper trims what looks overgrown. Red Lion inspects what will carry fire to your structure. Monitoring is scheduled compliance inspection against Cal Fire PRC 4291 and Zone 0 standards. We document what has drifted from the standard so your tree and landscape contractors have a clear specification to work from.
How often should wildfire defense monitoring happen?
Most properties in Napa, Solano, and Contra Costa need monitoring inspections between one and four times per year depending on vegetation, terrain, and fire exposure. Rural properties with heavy brush or oak canopy typically need quarterly inspections. Suburban homes often need twice a year timed to pre-fire season and post-fire season. Kevin will recommend a cadence after seeing the property.
Does Red Lion offer monitoring contracts or is it pay per visit?
Both options are available across Napa, Solano, and Contra Costa. Scheduled monitoring contracts give you a known annual cost, calendared inspections, and a continuous compliance record. Pay per visit works for properties with less predictable needs. We discuss which fits best during the free consultation.
What happens if Cal Fire defensible space standards change?
Red Lion stays current with changes and inspects against the latest Cal Fire benchmark at every monitoring visit. If a standard change means additional work is needed on your property (as happened with the 2024 Zone 0 updates under AB 3074), it is flagged in your inspection report so your contractors address it before the next fire season.
Does ongoing wildfire defense monitoring help with insurance renewals?
Documented monitoring often helps homeowners in Napa, Solano, and Contra Costa with insurance renewal and California FAIR Plan conversations by proving mitigation is being actively monitored rather than installed once and forgotten. Under California’s Safer from Wildfires framework, carriers recognize documented ongoing defensible space inspection alongside home hardening and community mitigation. Red Lion provides an interactive inspection report after every monitoring visit so you have the paper trail carriers ask for. Final insurance outcomes depend on your carrier and policy, and any insurance decisions should be discussed with your broker or carrier directly. Red Lion is not an insurance broker or licensed agent, and does not sell, place, or advise on insurance policies or coverage.
